Well Condition Assessment

City of Pismo Beach

WSC performed a condition assessment of the City of Pismo Beach’s Well #5 and Well #23.  The project evaluated hydrogeology, energy usage, remaining useful life, and other considerations, including water quality.  The goal of the project was to understand the current condition of the wells and recommend replacement or prioritize improvements, as required.

The capacity of Well #5 is approximately 550 gpm.  Well #5 was drilled in 1973, and is equipped with a 100 HP submersible pump.  The capacity of Well #23 is approximately 850 gpm.  Well #23 was drilled in 1990, and is equipped with a 125 HP vertical turbine pump.  Both wells have PVC casing liners installed.

As part of the project, WSC coordinated with Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) Advanced Pumping Efficiency Program (APEP) to perform subsidized pump efficiency tests on the wells, which provided data on the current overall pumping efficiency (OPE) of the wells.  WSC obtained monthly PG&E electricity usage data and City production data to trend and analyze the energy intensity of the wells.  WSC’s subconsultant, Cleath-Harris Geologists, performed a hydrogeologic investigation of the wells, which including 4-hour constant rate pumping tests and sand production testing with a Rossum sand tester.  WSC also estimated the remaining useful life of the major well components (well casing, pump, motor and electrical system).  Based on the findings of the assessment, WSC provided prioritized recommendations to the City to inform capital spending and budget development.
